It’s finally official: The LCBO has purchased 70 bottles of Samuel Adams Utopias and will be soon making them available in Ontario. There’s a catch, though. The 710mL bottles will not be found on LCBO shelves, but instead sales will only be conducted via telephone and Internet orders.
Even then, it’s not first come, first served. Orders placed for Utopias between January 6th (starting at 9:00 a.m.) and January 13th, 2011 (ending at 6:00 p.m.) will be entered in a lottery for a chance to win the opportunity to purchase one bottle (yes, randomly chosen beer lovers will be restricted to only one bottle apiece). Winners will be contacted on January 17th. The LCBO will then ship the beer at no additional charge.
The price tag for a bottle of Utopias will be $114.95.
The LCBO added this descriptor of the famous brew: “As you know, Sam Adams Utopias is considered by some beer collectors to be the culmination of the art of brewing. The 2009 release, which the LCBO is offering, is a blend of batches, some aged as long as 16 years in bourbon, sherry and port casks. Utopias is meant to be enjoyed more in the manner of a fine sherry, brandy or Cognac.”
I’ve spotted some beer fans online compare it to drinking fine whisky.
